Tips for making the best choices

Having a better understanding of the VTAC process and the available options can affect your further learning and employment. Ensure that your choices are informed and well thought through, or in other words, ensure that your want and desire is a good match for what you want in life.

  • Research thoroughly. Get acquainted with VTAC's Course Search tool

  • Seek advice. Consult with career counsellors and teachers

  • Stay updated. Regularly check your emails, including your junk mail

How to set your VTAC preferences

The process of setting you VTAC preferences is simple but important. The steps are below -

  1. Create your VTAC account, using the link at the top of the page

  2. Log into your VTAC account using your VTAC ID and PIN

  3. Enter details of your secondary school studies, following the prompts

  4. List your course preferences
    - Enter at least one course (up to eight courses in total) in order of your preference
    - You will only receive one offer per offer round, for your highest eligible preference, and then the other courses you want to do in order
    - Check that you meet prerequisites for the courses (See the admission information on the course page) and complete all relevant selection tasks where applicable.

  5. Enter any additional information required (For example, if you want to specify a nominee who can be contacted on your behalf), following the prompts. Review your application and make sure it's all correct

  6. Pay the VTAC application fee for timely applications (before 29th September). The fee is $80 for all current Year 12 students and $100 for all other applicants. You will be asked to pay online at the end of your course application. You can pay via PayPal or by Visa and Mastercard

  7. Save changes

VTAC Change of Preference

Change of preference is a period that exists to help you finalise your preferred courses once your results are in. It's very important you're across the key dates for changing your VTAC preferences. If you're not, you may not get into your chosen course.

  • Timely applications close 29th September

  • VCE results release - 7am, 11th December

  • Change of preference period - You have from the results release date above until 12pm, Saturday 13th December to change your preferences (VCE, December offer domestic round)

  • January offer round - You have until 23rd December to change your preferences for this round

Considerations when changing preferences

When changing your VTAC preferences, consider the following factors:

  • Prerequisites - If you don't meet these for the course you're applying to, you won't get in

  • Course availability - Some courses close before others. Always check that course you want is still open

  • Personal interests - Only choose courses you actually want to do. Don't get stuck with something you were only mildly interested in

Understanding offer rounds

VTAC's processes of applications include 'offer rounds'.

Main Round:
This is the grand reveal and where most offers are made. For most, the main round will reflect what they'll do at uni. But don't despair; if you aren't made an offer to your dream course in the main round, there are subsequent rounds to come.

Subsequent Rounds:
If you don't get an offer in the main round or if you want to try for a different course, this is your second chance.

Offers are made based on the highest preference for which you will meet all requirements. If you don't get your top choice, VTAC considers your next preference, ensuring you're placed in the best possible course.

Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)

The VTAC equity schemes (SEAS) and scholarships application is sent to all the courses you apply to.

What is the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)?
If there have been circumstances that have affected your study, you should consider putting in an equity schemes and scholarships application. It is designed to make sure institutions get a sense of your full potential and it enables institutions to consider the circumstances you have experienced and their impact upon your studies when making selection decisions.
It allows institutions to grant special consideration for course entry.
It does not exempt you from meeting the institutional and course requirements.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is an overall percentile rank reflecting a student's Year 12 achievement compared to the age group in a given year. The ATAR allows tertiary institutions to competitively rank students who have completed different combinations of VCE studies. It is calculated by VTAC, solely for use by institutions for admission into some tertiary courses.

The ATAR is reported as a number between 0.00 and 99.95 with increments of 0.05. A student with an ATAR of 75.00 has achieved VCE results above 75 percent of the Year 12 age group.

The ATAR is a rank, not a score. It is designed specifically to assist tertiary institutions in selecting applicants for some courses. The ATAR is only one tool used for selection into tertiary courses, and not all courses use the ATAR.
