MSC Leadership Opportunities

Leadership Opportunities

Mansfield Secondary College actively encourages students to participate in leadership opportunities to foster their involvement in leadership roles whilst at school and for the future. Each year, students can apply for leadership positions at the College as School Captains (Year 12), School Prefects (Year 12), Sports House Captains (Years 11 & 12) and Student Action Teams (Year 7 to Year 12).

The College promotes and supports student involvement in leadership opportunities offered by outside providers such as the Department of Education and Training and private organisations. A variety of opportunities are advertised to students throughout the year including: leadership programs such as those offered by the School for Student Leadership, Mittagundi and Camp Awakenings; and drama and music programs such as the Beechworth Music Camp, State Schools Spectacular, MusoMagic and the Mansfield Music and Dramatic Society.

  • Student Action Teams
the school student leadership is made up of four school captains and a prefect team who are involved in the day-to-day running of school life. The Student Action Teams (SAT) are students from years 7 to 11 who sit on school committees e.g. Positive Behaviour School (PBS) and support the school in making decisions around school issues. These positions undergo an application process and interview. The SAT is integral to student voice in our school.
  • Beechworth Music Camp
a music camp which invites students from schools across Northeast Victoria to participate in three days of workshops and master classes focused on promoting musicianship skills in their respective musical instrument. The camp concludes with a concert to which parents and the general public are invited.
  • MusoMagic
through the magic of song and song-writing, MusoMagic provides innovative workshops and programs that unite, engage, motivate and empower groups of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Drama
teaching staff at Mansfield Secondary College work closely with the Mansfield Music and Dramatic Society (MMuDS) to encourage and promote involvement in MMuDS’ annual drama productions as actors, musicians, stage production and lighting & sound. In recent years, students have been involved in the productions of: The Sound of Music, Footloose, Jekyll & Hyde, Lyfe of Brian and Beauty and the Beast.
  • State Schools Spectacular
an opportunity for students to be involved in a musical extravaganza which brings together approximately 3,000 students from across Victoria held at Hisense Arena. Student participation ranges from inclusion in the massive choir, band and orchestra or staging.
  • Mittagundi
an outdoor education centre and pioneer-style farm established with the belief that young people, the outdoors, purposeful work and challenges foster personal development and leadership skills. Situated on a 400-acre property on the Upper Mitta Mitta River, north of Omeo, Mittagundi provides 10-day outdoor programs for students aged 14-17 from across Victoria to explore the High Country.
  • School for Student Leadership
a Year 9 leadership school for students attending government secondary colleges across Victoria. The School for Student Leadership offers term long leadership programs to selected students in Year 9 at its campuses at Dinner Plain, Snowy River and Gnurad Gundidj. In addition, six-week China programs are offered. In 2018, six students from Mansfield Secondary College will attend the six-week Victorian Young Leaders to China Program during Term 3.
